Our third submissions call for 2015 is for FICTION. We are looking for short novels which you can reasonably assume to mean 25-50,000 words if that helps. We have a feeling for what we want and will know it when we see it. You could say we are looking for 21st Centrury Alt-lit Kook with a British slant from writers based here in Britain. Sorry if you are further afield. Our limbs just aren’t that long yet. Here is a reading list to help you. And yes I know a whole bunch of writers on this list are not British – sheesh – bend the grey stuff a little our way wontcha. If the elusive thing that we are looking to help invent had already been invented we wouldn’t need to help invent it would we?

Go to work and do your job.Care for your children. Pay your bills. Obey the law. Buy Products by Noah Cicero. (THE stand out novel written in the English language in the 21st Centruy in our opinion)

The Quiet American by Graham Greene

The Butcher by Alina Reyes

All My Friends are Superheroes by Andrew Kaufman

Sombrero Fallout by Richard Brautigan

Death and the Penguin by Andrey Kurkov

Morvern Callar by Alan Warner

The Driver’s Seat by Muriel Spark

Paradoxia by Lydia Lunch

Add to that pretty much anything by Elmore Leonard because we sign up to his rules of writing. Give us a dialogue driven vision that rips along. If your work has lots of long long long descriptive passages I guarantee we will fall asleep reading it. We would rather see a good idea roughly rendered than a small idea explored in minute detail in perfectly polished sentence after perfectly polished sentence. We are a bit punk rock about this we know. We buy into that Lou Reedism about three chords being jazz (was that Lou Reed? Who cares you get the point right?). Sorry if this puts you off. That just means we are not the right home for your work. If you get it though, if your pulse just skipped a blip as you read this then you know what we are on about and you are the right kind of word junky we want to hear from.

Usual rules apply. NO attachments in the first instance. A brief intro about you, who you are what you have been doing, what you like and then a brief 2-3 paragraph description of your book. It doesn’t have to be a polished synopsis or whatever. Just tell us in your own words in the way you would explain it to a kid on the bus that just asked you what your book is about and then a couple of thousand words of the books itself. Just a taster – make us want more. If we like it we will ask for the full MS. submissions  AT burning eye dot co dot uk

We don’t do hardbacks. We do E and paperbacks. We do it our way. 21st Century Punk Publishing. Never Knowingly Mainstream. We mean it when we say it. If that works for you – get in touch.

Timelines will be as follows:  Friday 15th August is the deadline for the first 2000 words. We’ll call in MS’s by 12 Sept with a decision by 31st Oct. All 2014. Publication will be in 2015.
