In 2014 after Michael Gove (then Education Minister) made the cuts that broke the camel’s back, teachers and education workers across the UK were furious, frustrated and ready to strike. Their collective anger and protests were articulated through one woman, one poem that went viral with over 290,000 views in 24 hours. That woman was Jess Green.
Burning Eye Books is very pleased to present Jess Green’s first poetry collection Burning Books!
Burning Books is taken from Jess’s spoken word show set in an inner city secondary school suffering the cuts and blows of the Coalition government. It champions the underdogs; the unnoticed and unheard stories bearing the gritty reality of the UK’s education system. Since her internet fame she has won critical acclaim for her shows at the Edinburgh Fringe and has performed at festivals including Glastonbury. Her poetry resonates with audiences from school halls to festival tents. Jess has a solemn wit which seeks to bring social and political issues to the forefront of her personal stories.
