This week is incredibly busy for everyone, it’s National Poetry Day and the start of Black History Month where there are innumerable events and occasions up and down the UK to educate and celebrate. We are also releasing two titles this week, one is a second collection from a returning fave (Lucy English – pre order here), and the other, the subject of this post, is a beautifully crafted debut collection from Irish poet Ciarán Hodgers.
Ciarán has been making waves in the spoken word scene for some years now, and Cosmocartography is the written testament to finely curated and thoughtful work that explores identity, love and freedom of movement in the epic backdrop of the universe as a map for human existence and growth. The introduction offers an explanation before the reader dives into the poetry:
Cosmocartography as a word doesn’t, in the strictest terms, exist. It’s an amalgam ofcosmo (‘relating to the world or universe’) andcartography (‘the science or practice of drawing maps’), arising from the idea that constellations can be understood as maps of meaning. We drape stories over them not just to make them memorable and therefore useful for navigation, but also to explain ourselves, the world around us, where we come from and how we might choose to live our lives.
Ciarán’s book is officially out with us this week, but we wanted to give you a heads up on the book tour that he is embarking on, so that you can get yourself to a show, and get yourself a copy of this marvellous debut.
