Sometimes in an open submissions process, you catch a hand that will take you from beginning to end of something. Biceps came to us at a time of grief and loss and rebuilding. Laurie paints a relationship, with all the mundane and the extraordinary, as though every moment is worth it. We as a collective and individuals are often going through transitional periods that may be hard to find peaceful resolutions. Biceps is a beautifully bittersweet offering of self preservation and empathy.
Biceps is a love story, following a relationship from first sparks one frosty Bonfire Night through day trips to windy Hull and into the stalemate of dysfunctional domesticity.
It’s a story about the physical and emotional tidying we go through when we fall out of love.
It’s a story that explores the small ways we learn to understand ourselves better as a result of our relationships and gain the strength to start rebuilding in the face of personal loss.
‘Laurie’s debut collection is full of heart. His poems deal with themes of love and loss with so much care. This collection celebrates life’s little details and what it is to be human. I could read it again and again.’ – LAURIE BOLGER
