Revolutions in publishing – exemplified by the pioneering publisher Burning Eye – are leading poets to write books who would normally confine themselves to the stage.
– Joelle Taylor, On Being Seen: The Rise of Spoken Word
Here at Burning Eye Books we think of ourselves as an upstart indie punk publishing co. We have been described as ‘the plucky underdog’ of the indies.
Burning Eye Books is small independent publisher in the South West predominately specialising in promoting spoken word artists. We have spent a decade dispelling the assumption that performance poetry does not transfer well to page as well as give emerging and established artist opportunities to be published where they might be rejected from other traditional poetry publishers. We look for the bold, the fearless and the strange, and we pride ourselves on providing a conscious portfolio of brilliant poets from across the UK.
Burning Eye Books was founded in 2011 by Clive Birnie and has led the way in indie publishing for performance artists. With editor Bridget Hart the press has been exemplary in inclusivity and is always broadening the definition of performance, and success for people from marginalised communities.
